Bad times roll over as 2012 kicks in
It was the year of the three Ms – Manyi, Manuel and Malema. At the beginning of the year former finance minister Trevor Manuel shocked the establishment by writing a letter to Independent Newspapers objecting to statements made by the newly appointed “director general equivalent” and cabinet spokesman, Jimmy Manyi. And although the debate on nationalisation rolled on from the ANC conference in Polokwane in 2007, Julius Malema’s public statements continued to upset investors, the opposition and eventually even the ANC establishment. More than President Jacob Zuma, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, these three leaders defined what has become a severely divided ruling party in 2011. Source
